Bacanora

Bacanora is an agave based spirit produced in the State of Sonora in Mexico. Bacanora is made of Agave, just like Tequila and Mezcal. The differnece between Bacanora and Tequila is; Tequila is produced of Blue Weber Agave, Bacanora is made of Agave Angustfolia Haw aka Agave Pacifica.

Bacabora was introduced around 300 years ago, Smoother than Mezcal, smokier than Tequila, just as powerful at either perfectly descripes Bacanora perfectly. The consumption of Bacanora got outer hand and so the government decided to ban the spirit and punished anyone producing, or drinking the spirit with imprisonment of even death.

Destillers went in the shadow and the consumers, fearfull of arrest often hide their bottles behinde wardrobe o runder loose floorboards. In this way they created the infamous reputation as „The Secret of Sonora“.

In 1992, nearlly 100 years after the ban of Bacanora the gouvernment decided to lift the ban. Years later, in 2005, the mexican gouvernment bestowed Bacanora with the Denomination of Origin (NOM).

Since then Spirits which are produced of Agave Angustfolia Haw aka Agave Pacifica in the municipals Bacanora, Sahuaripa, Arivechi, Soyopa, San Javier, Cumpas, Moctezuma, San Pedro de la Cueva, Tepache, Divisaderos, Granados, Huásba, Villa Hidalgo, Bacadéhuachi, Nácori Chico, Huachinera, Villa Pesqueira, Aconchi, San Felipe de Jesus, Huépac, Ban´smichi, Rayón, Baciácora, Opodepe, Arizpe, Rosario de Tesopaco, Quiriego, Suaqui Grande, Onavas, Yécora, Álamos, San Miguel de Horcasitas, Ures and La Colorada in Sonora are only allowed to call them Bacanora.
